The Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system prevents fuel system vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Vapors trapped inside the fuel tank expand on warm days and are routed through the fuel vapor vent valve and the fuel vapor control valve to the EVAP canister. The canister stores the vapors temporarily until they can be consumed by the engine. The EVAP canister, containing activated charcoal, is located in the right rear corner of the vehicle. The Natural Vacuum Leak Detection (NVLD) assembly, which monitors the temperature and pressure of the fuel vapors, is also located in the same spot. The EVAP canister purge solenoid regulates the flow of vapors from the canister into the intake manifold. Symptoms of a faulty EVAP system include a strong fuel odor. To inspect or replace the EVAP canister, the vehicle needs to be raised and the right rear wheel and wheel well splash shield need to be removed. The NVLD assembly and detection system should be diagnosed and repaired by a qualified professional. The EVAP canister purge solenoid is located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment and can be replaced by disconnecting the electrical connector and hoses, and pulling it straight up. The NVLD filter, NVLD pump, and EVAP canister are located in the upper part of the right rear wheel well. To replace any of these components, the entire assembly needs to be removed. The NVLD filter can be detached from its mounting bracket by disengaging the mounting tab and hinge. The NVLD pump can be unsnapped from its mounting bracket by pushing the mounting tab. The EVAP canister can be removed by disconnecting hoses and removing the mounting bracket. The EVAP line can be disconnected from the canister and the quick-connect fitting at the lower end can be squeezed and pulled off.
