Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open and should be replaced. If the engine runs hot and the upper radiator hose isn't hot, the thermostat is probably stuck closed and should also be replaced. It is important not to drive the vehicle without a thermostat as it may affect the computer's operation and fuel economy. To replace the thermostat, disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Follow the upper radiator hose to locate the thermostat housing and detach the hose from the fitting. If necessary, cut off the old hose and install a new one. Remove the housing cover and the old thermostat, making sure to note its orientation. Clean the housing and cover of any old gasket material and apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket. Install the new thermostat and gasket, then reattach the cover and hose. Refill the cooling system and start the engine to check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
