How to Check and Replace the Engine-Mounted Cooling Fan and radiator-mounted cooling fan on Ram 1500?

The engine-mounted cooling fan, also known as the viscous fan, is controlled by the PCM and should be checked by a qualified repair shop if it is not coming on and causing the engine to overheat. Symptoms of fan clutch failure include noisy operation, looseness, vibration, and fluid leakage. To check the fan, rock it back and forth for excessive bearing play and turn the blades by hand. For a hot engine check, start the engine and let it warm up, then turn off the engine and try turning the fan by hand. For a radiator-mounted electric cooling fan, if it is not coming on, the fan motor can be tested by connecting it directly to the battery. For component replacement, the viscous and electric cooling fans are removed together. For diesel engines, the process is similar, but there may be additional steps. For 2010 and later models, the process involves disconnecting the battery, removing the radiator top cover plate, detaching the viscous fan, and unclipping the fan shrouds.

Ram 1500 Cooling Fan Assembly

The Ram 1500 Cooling Fan Assembly pulls air through the radiator when you're going so slow that enough air won't flow through on its own. The Cooling Fan Assembly utilizes a shrouded blade activated by a belt-driven clutch or integrated electric motor to pull airflow across the fins, allowing heated coolant to lose temperature before re-entry into the block. When it was first introduced in the Ram 1500, it made use of a mechanical fan that turned whenever the crankshaft did. While that was a simple enough construction with no moving parts, it wasted power at highway speeds. Later Ram 1500 models made use of an electric Cooling Fan Assembly that only spun when sensors detected the temperature was rising. In other words, it was not always on, so it saved fuel as well and noise was less annoying too. So today's 1500 setup is all about balancing better cooling with fuel economy. No matter the style, each Cooling Fan Assembly is located just behind the grille, next to the radiator. The assembly consists of a fan, motor, and molded shroud all in one bolt-on unit.
