    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the components of the engine, including the cylinder head in 3.6L V6 engine on Dodge Challenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components first you have to give the negative terminal of the battery a clean disconnect and on 2015 and later models you must disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor connector first. Lift the front of the vehicle with jackstands and then lower it, remove the engine oil and the coolant from the vehicle. Take off the drivebelt, air filter housing and resonator and disconnect all wires and vacuum hoses from intake manifolds and cylinder heads and label them for reuse. Continue with the deletion of intake manifolds, ignition coils, spark plugs, catalytic converter(s) and valve cover, crankshaft balancer, and oil pan. If working on the left cylinder head either unbolt the air conditioning compressor from the engine while still connected to the refrigerant lines, disconnect the main engine harness connectors and remove the upper intake support bracket. For the right cylinder head remove the following components: power-steering pump, heater core tube fasteners, battery, and battery-tray, and oil dipstick tube fastener. Take off the timing chain cover, turn the crankshaft clockwise to have the number one piston at the TDC of the exhaust stroke and make sure there are correct position of the cam phaser arrows. Take out the timing chain, oil control valves, timing chain tensioner, chain guides and camshafts as well as the rocker arms together with the lash adjusters bearing in mind that; rocker arms and lash adjusters should always be arranged in the correct sequence. Relax the cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence as a means of removal and lift the cylinder head off the block with use of a hammer and wood block without scratching the surfaces. Cylinder head: check and test as required. For installation make sure that the surfaces of the cylinder head and the engine block are clean, use a gasket scraper and brake cleaner. They should ensure that some sort of coverage is placed over the lifter valley just to remove most debris and to inspect the mating surfaces for damage. Align the new gasket with the dowel pins and put the cylinder head on the engine block; use new cylinder head bolts contracting the head to the block without applying oil on the threads beforehand. As previously stated, uninstall in reverse sequence, re-install the remaining components, replace engine oil and filter, fill the cooling system, start the engine and look for leaks and efficient performance.

    Q:
How to remove and install Cylinder Head in V8 engine on Dodge Challenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
To do so, reduce the fuel system pressure and locate the negative cable connection to the battery, and then pull out the Intelligent Battery Sensor connector on 2015 and later cars. This one requires bending down: remove the intake manifold and drain the cooling system. On 6.1L engine models, the drive belt must be removed and the power steering pump, but the hoses are left intact. Second, unbolt the exhaust manifold(s) from the cylinder head(s) and be advised that on 2015 and later models of challenger, with 5.7L engine and the all models with the 6.4L, the exhaust manifolds can only be removed after the removal of the cylinder head. Move on to the next step of the process aimed at the removal of the valve covers, the rocker arms, and the pushrods; it is beneficial to keep to the European automotive repair standards and collect all parts which might be needed for the further steps in one place. Turn the head bolts counter clockwise by 270 degrees in a diagonal pattern contrary to the tightening sequence in order to release them and they should be easily removed by the hands and should be stacked for ease of reassembly. Take the heads off the engine gently, taking care to use a block of wood and a hammer if you have to, then resting them on blocks of wood to preserve the gasket sealing surfaces. For installation, the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block should be clean and you should use gasket removal solvents and scraper in order to clean them. Ensure there is no damage on any of the joining surfaces and rectify if there is any as it will compromise on the final bonding. Tape over the threads in the head bolt holes and clean the bolts before placing the new gaskets in the right place over the dowels in the block. Put the heads back into place without damaging the gaskets next, apply a layer of engine oil to the threads of the head bolts Put them back into their right places, and tighten up as according to the sequence he mentioned and torque to the recommended amount. Return the vehicle to its operational condition by completing the following steps: reinstall the fasteners, add more coolant, as well replace the engine oil and filter; turn the vehicle on to make sure that some operational anomalies like leakage is noticed.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the cylinder head in 2.5L four cylinder engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the rocker arms and pushrods, followed by the intake and exhaust manifolds. Take off the drivebelt(s) and unbolt the power steering pump, setting it aside without disconnecting the hoses. For air-conditioned models, remove the bolt securing the air conditioning compressor/alternator bracket to the cylinder head, then unbolt the bracket from the engine and set it aside without disconnecting the hoses. Label and disconnect the wire from the coolant temperature sending unit on the cylinder head, then label the spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs. Remove the ten bolts securing the cylinder head and lift it off the engine, using a prybar if necessary while ensuring no damage to gasket surfaces. If the head is stuck, tap it gently with a soft-face hammer or a block of wood and a hammer to break the seal. Stuff clean shop towels into the cylinders and thoroughly clean the gasket surfaces, removing all traces of gasket material. Run an appropriately sized tap into the bolt holes in the cylinder head and use a die over the bolt threads to remove sealant and corrosion, ensuring all bolt holes are clean and dry. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks and check for warpage. Note that 1987 and 1988 four-cylinder engines use different head gaskets than 1989 and later models, which are not interchangeable and require different tightening torques. The earlier models use stamped steel gaskets, which should have an even coat of gasket sealing compound applied to both sides, while the later models use a composition gasket that should be installed dry. Install the new gasket with the word TOP facing the cylinder head side and place the cylinder head on the engine. Coat the threads of the stud bolt with Loctite Pipe Sealant with Teflon and install the bolts, tightening them in the specified sequence and to the required torque. Reinstall the remaining components in the reverse order of removal, change the oil and filter, refill the cooling system, and run the engine while checking for leaks and proper operation.

    Q:
How to disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and remove the cylinder heads in 3.8L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Take off the intake manifold and if left cylinder head is to be removed, then also remove oil dipstick and dipstick tube. Remove all the wires and vacuum hoses connected to the cylinder heads, and make sure to tag them so as to enable easy reconnecting. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and coil and label each of the wires. Take off the exhaust manifolds and the covers of the valves, then proceed to the rocker arms and the push rods. With a new cylinder head gasket place it on the cardboard and trace the cylinders and bolts layout in terms of the front of the engine and then make punch marks on the cardboard at the places where the bolts are supposed to go. Turn the cylinder head mounting bolt in each location a few turns at a time starting from the opposite sequence of the tightening pattern; store the bolts in the cardboard box. Remove the cylinder heads from the engine carefully without scratching the mating surfaces and if required use a hammer and a block of wood having developed a suitable technique to get over the gasket. Following removal, stand the cylinder heads on wood to protect the gasket surfaces and should be taken for analysis to an automotive machine shop. During installation, it is preferable that the two mating surfaces of each cylinder head and the engine block is free from contaminants these are got using gasket scraper and cleaning materials. Also ensure that there is no sign of damages on the mating surfaces and counter them at once. You can use a tap at the threads that are located in the cylinder head bolt holes. Place a new gasket with appropriate alignment to fit the dowel pins on the cylinder head and then locate the cylinder head on the engine block. All cylinder head bolts must be checked and replaced if worn in any way. Screw in the head bolts to the prescribed torque then turn all of them 90 degrees. The rest of the components are reinstalled in reverse sequence, oil and filter are replaced, cooling system is refilled, the engine is turned on and checked for any fluid leaks and normal operation.
