    Q:
How to remove and inspect camshafts in 3.5L V6 engine on Chrysler 300? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the camshafts, one must first take off the cylinder head(s). Remove the camshaft thrust plate, O-ring seal and camshaft oil seal being careful not to damage the cams bearings or journals. After removal, clean and look for any uneven wear patterns on the lobe besides pitting or seizure on the camshaft. Check whether there is excessive wear or out of round conditions in bearing journals by measuring with a micrometer and comparing these measurements with specifications. Measure each of intake and exhaust camshafts' lobe height to check if there is excessive variation in measurements. Inspect all lobes of a camshaft if they have heat discoloration, score marks, chipped areas, pits or an uneven wear. In case lobes are in good condition and lobe lift variation measurements fall within limits, the cams can be reused. The procedure does not end until after installing lubricated camshafts bearing journals using mineral oil. Then gently insert a new seal at front of head when placing cylindrical head on top of it again. At last mount back side appendage using another O-ring onto head itself where it belonged before then reverse steps as described earlier.

    A:
Camshaft bearing journals should be inspected for uneven wear, pitting, and evidence of seizure. They should be measured with a micrometer to check for excessive wear or out-of-round conditions, with the measurements compared to specifications.
