Q:
How to Check the Ignition Coils of Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the 3.6L V6, 3.7L V6, and 4.7L VB engines' ignition coils, start by removing the ignition coil and cleaning the outer case for any damage. Clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion on the coil tower terminal, cleaning it with a wire brush if necessary. Use an ohmmeter to measure the coil primary resistance by attaching the leads to the two terminals of the connector. Compare the measured resistance to the specified range and replace the ignition coil if it falls outside the range. To check the coil secondary resistance, connect one ohmmeter lead to the positive terminal of the connector and the other lead to the high-tension terminal. Compare the measured resistance to the specified range and replace the ignition coil if necessary. If the primary and secondary resistance values are within specification but the coil is still misfiring or causing trouble codes, try swapping it with an adjacent coil. If the issue persists, consult a professional for further testing. To remove and install the ignition coil, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the coil mounting nut, and detach the coil from the spark plug. For Hemi engines, follow similar steps but also clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion on the high-tension terminal. Measure the coil primary resistance and compare it to the specified range. If the primary resistance is within range but issues persist, try swapping the coil with an adjacent one. If unsure, have the coil checked by a professional.

Q:
How do you replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier 2001 Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier models, start by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal. Mark the wires and terminals with numbered tape, then remove the primary wires and high-tension cable from the coil. Disconnect the coil mounting bracket and remove the coil/bracket assembly. Clean the outer case and check for damage. Clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion. Check the coil primary resistance by attaching an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals. Check the coil secondary resistance by hooking one ohmmeter lead to the primary terminals and the other to the high-tension terminal. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the coil. Install the new coil and hook up the wires, then reattach the cable to the negative battery terminal.
