    A failure in the water pump can cause engine damage. To check for leaks, use a flashlight to find the weep hole on the pump from underneath. Shaft wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is rocked up and down. It is possible for a water pump to be bad, even if it doesn't howl or leak water; the only way to check is to remove the pump for examination.

    Disconnect the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s). Drain the cooling system. Remove the drivebelt and air filter housing. Disconnect the heater and radiator hoses. Remove the idler pulley and water pump mounting bolts. Detach the fan assembly and lower radiator hose. Clean the bolt threads and engine surfaces. Compare the new pump to the old one. Remove all traces of old gasket material. Clean the engine and water pump mating surfaces. Position the O-ring/gasket on the pump. Attach the pump and O-ring/gasket to the engine. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Turn the water pump by hand. Reinstall all parts removed. Refill the cooling system. Run the engine and check for leaks.
