Dodge Colt Distributor

The Distributor of Dodge Colt vehicles has more responsibility of making sure that there is proper ignition especially in terms of high-voltage current from the ignition coil and then to the spark plugs so as to maintain the correct sequence. Before the mid nineties older Dodge Colt models employed mechanical distributors that used breaker points and advance mechanisms which in turn contained wear components that needed to be serviced. With the development in technology, what we had were known as the electronic distributors which proved to be more reliable than the mentioned mechanical systems and were known to require less maintenance. Dodge Colt distributors have changed different times, from mechanical type breaker point to electric type ignition utilizing Hall Effect or optical pick ups. This shift improves the cranktrain lubrification by increasing the possibility of spark timing, thus improving the efficiency of the engine. Although current models of automobiles have shifted to the distributorless ignition systems, the Dodge Colt use distributors in order to control and enhance the combustion chamber and overall performance of the vehicle.

Dodge Colt Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to extract and reassemble the components of a distributor after removing it on Dodge Colt?
    A:
With the distributor removed from the engine, extract the two screws and pull the control unit from the distributor body, ensuring not to clean away the silicone grease that coats the mating surfaces. Depress the spring-loaded cap fixing screws and turn to release the securing hooks, then remove the cap. Extract the mounting screws to remove the rotor arm, followed by extracting the single screw to withdraw the governor assembly with the reluctor. Remove the pick-up coil using two screws, then unscrew the two mounting screws for the vacuum unit, extract the E-Clip from the vacuum unit link rod, and withdraw the vacuum unit. Next, remove the baseplate assembly, mark the relative position of the driven gear to the distributor shaft, and drive out the locking pin before withdrawing the shaft. Reassembly is a reversal of dismantling.
