Q:
How to Replace a Water Pump on Dodge Ram 1500 and Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s). Drain the cooling system. Remove the drivebelt. For the 3.6L engine, disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector and remove the air filter housing. Disconnect the heater and radiator hoses at the water pump. Remove the idler pulley mounting bolt and idler pulley. Remove the water pump mounting bolts, making sure to identify the four bolts that bolt directly to the timing chain cover. Remove the pump and discard the gasket. For the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines, detach the engine-mounted viscous fan assembly from the water pump. Remove the radiator-mounted electric fan. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump. For the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi engine, remove the air filter housing, the air inlet ducts, and the resonator brackets. Remove the fan assembly. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine. For the 6.7L diesel engine, remove the air filter housing and the air intake pipe. Remove the alternator. For all engines, remove the bolts and detach the water pump from the engine. Clean the bolt threads and the threaded holes in the engine to remove corrosion and sealant. Compare the new pump to the old one to make sure they're identical. Remove all traces of old gasket material from the engine and water pump. Clean the engine and water pump mating surfaces with brake system cleaner. On water pumps equipped with an O-ring seal, position it in the groove on the back of the water pump. On water pumps equipped with a gasket, apply a thin film of RTV sealant to the gasket mating surface of the new pump, and position the gasket on the pump. Apply a thin film of RTV sealant to the engine-side of the gasket and slip a couple of bolts through the pump mounting holes to hold the gasket in place. Carefully attach the pump and O-ring/gasket to the engine and thread the bolts into the holes finger tight. Install the remaining bolts and tighten them in a criss-cross pattern in 1/4-turn increments. Turn the water pump by hand to make sure it rotates freely. Reinstall all parts removed for access to the pump. Refill the cooling system. Run the engine and check for leaks.

Q:
How Can You Check for a Failure in the Water Pump on Dodge Ram 1500 and Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating. There are several ways to check the operation of the water pump while it's installed on the engine. If the pump is defective, it should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. Water pumps are equipped with weep or vent holes. If a failure occurs in the pump seal, coolant will leak from the hole. In most cases, you'll need a flashlight to find the hole on the water pump from underneath to check for leaks. The water pump weep hole will drip coolant when the seal on the pump shaft fails (typical). Note: The weep hole on some models is difficult to see because of the design of the pulleys and drive belts. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound at the front of the engine while it's running. Shaft wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is rocked up and down. Don't mistake drive belt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. It is possible for a water pump to be bad, even if it doesn't howl or leak water. Sometimes the fins on the back of the impeller can corrode away until the pump is no longer effective. The only way to check for this is to remove the pump for examination.

Q:
How do you remove the four-cylinder for the 2007 Jeep Liberty? Posted by Customer
A:
Start by disconnecting the battery's negative terminal and draining the cooling system. Remove the coolant reservoir/windshield washer reservoir assembly on V6 models, as well as the cooling fan(s) and shroud. Take off the drivebelts and water pump pulley, and on 2.4L four-cylinder engines, remove the timing belt, timing belt idler pulley, camshaft sprockets, and rear timing belt cover. For 3.7L V6 engines, detach the lower radiator hose from the pump. On 4.0L engines, remove the air filter housing and the right engine mount through-bolt. Use an engine hoist to raise the engine slightly and secure it in place with a jack.
