Q:
What Should Be Checked Before Replacing a Thermostat? Posted by Customer
A:
Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open and should be replaced. If the engine runs hot, check the temperature of the radiator hose that leads from the thermostat to the radiator. If the hose isn't hot, but the engine is, the thermostat is probably stuck closed and should be replaced. If the inlet radiator hose is hot, it means that the coolant is flowing and the thermostat is open. For the replacement process, start by disconnecting the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s) and draining the cooling system. The location of the thermostat housing varies depending on the engine type. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine for the 3.6L engine and the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi engine. For the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines, follow the lower radiator hose to the engine. For the diesel engine, follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. Remove the necessary components to access the thermostat housing. Squeeze the tabs on the hose clamp to loosen it and detach the hose(s) from the thermostat housing. If the hose is stuck, twist it with adjustable pliers to break the seal. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine and remove the thermostat. Install a new rubber gasket around the thermostat and insert it into the thermostat housing. Install the thermostat housing and bolts onto the engine, then reattach the hose(s) and tighten the hose clamp(s) securely. Refill the cooling system, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
