- Q: How to release and adjust the alternator mounting and timing belt on Dodge Colt?A:Release the alternator mounting and adjuster link bolts, push the alternator towards the engine, and remove the drivebelt. Unbolt and remove the pulley from the water pump. Using a ring spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt, set the locating pin on the crankshaft sprocket opposite the TDC mark on the belt cover with No 1 piston at TDC on its compression stroke, which can be checked by observing that the contact end of the distributor rotor arm is opposite the No 1 HT lead segment in the distributor cap. Unbolt and remove the timing belt cover. Release the belt tensioner pinch bolt, followed by the tensioner pivot mounting bolt, then lever the tensioner towards the water pump and retighten the bolts to remove tension from the belt. Slide the toothed belt from the camshaft pulley. Remove the four small bolts from the crankshaft pulley, ensuring the center bolt is held while the small ones are unscrewed to avoid altering the TDC mark setting. Pull off the pulley and remove the timing belt from the crankshaft sprocket, marking it for direction of running and tooth alignment if it is to be reused. Before fitting the belt, ensure the crankshaft has not moved from its TDC setting by checking that the sprocket roll pin aligns with the projection on the front casing. If the crankshaft sprocket has been removed, ensure the belt flange behind it has its convex face against the sprocket. Check that the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the mark on the cylinder head. Fit the timing belt, ensuring the tension side is taut between sprockets, then refit the crankshaft pulley. Release the tensioner bolts to allow movement and apply tension to the belt, tightening the tensioner pinch bolt followed by the pivot bolt to the specified torque. Using a spanner on the crankshaft pulley center bolt, turn the crankshaft through one complete turn (360°) and re-align the TDC marks. Release the tensioner pivot and pinch bolts in that order, then retighten them in reverse order to ensure the belt is correctly tensioned. Finally, refit the timing belt cover and the water pump pulley, and fit and adjust the drivebelt.
